Cranial osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of
osteopathic treatment that encourages the release of
stresses and tensions throughout the whole body,
including the head.
It is a gentle yet extremely effective approach and
may be used in a wide range of conditions for people
of all ages, from birth to old age.
Osteopaths may use either one technique type or
combinations of techniques such as manipulation,
soft tissue and cranial techniques to
help your symptoms resolve. This will be discussed
with you at your initial consultation. If there is a
certain technique that you would prefer to be used
then you should mention this to your osteopath.
Training in Cranial
Osteopathy.
Most undergraduate
programmes in the UK are currently to Masters level
and do teach cranial techniques. However most people
who wish to specialise in this method will undergo
further training. At the moment the basic level
would mean you can become a member of the Sutherland
Society. With further training, usually taking a
minimum of four years, you are entitled to become a
member of the Sutherland Cranial College (SCC). Brian
is an honorary member of the SCC and Louise is due
to complete the course this year and will then be
entitled to use the nominal letters MSCC. There are
other post graduate programmes in the UK.
What can
cranial osteopaths treat?
While it can be highly effective at relieving
symptoms cranial osteopathy aims to treat the whole
person not just the condition, so a very wide range
of situations may benefit from treatment.
When we experience physical or emotional stresses
our body tissues tend to tighten up. The body may
have been able to adapt to these effects at the
time, but a lasting strain often remains. Any
tensions which remain held in the body can restrict
its free movement. Gradually the body may find it
more and more difficult to cope with accumulated
stresses and symptoms may develop.
Please call or
email the clinic if you
are unsure of whether it can help.
