How Can Osteopathy Help With Headaches and Migraine?

A whole-body approach to understanding and managing headaches and migraines, from identifying the underlying causes to building a plan that works for you.

Headaches and migraines are among the most common conditions affecting people of all ages. They range from mild and uncomfortable to severely debilitating, interfering with daily life, work, and activities. While medication can provide temporary relief, many people look for a longer-term approach that identifies the root cause and allows them to self-manage more effectively.

Osteopathic treatment can be effective in the management of headaches and migraines by addressing the underlying factors contributing to the pain. With the right support, headaches don't have to be a constant struggle.

Types of Headache

What Types of Headache Can Osteopathy Help With?

Osteopathy can support the management of a wide range of headache types. Each has different triggers and patterns, but many share common underlying factors that hands-on treatment can address.

Tension headaches Sinus headaches Cluster headaches TMJ headaches Cervicogenic (neck) headaches Hormone-related headaches Stress-related headaches Migraines
Understanding Headaches

Why Do Headaches Happen?

There are many potential causes of headaches, including muscle tension, poor posture, joint dysfunction, stress, and hormonal changes. Pain can be localised to one area or radiate throughout the head, neck, and shoulders.

Most headaches are treated with painkillers, which manage symptoms effectively in the short term. However, for many people this relief is temporary. Osteopathy offers something different: a thorough investigation into the underlying factors driving the headaches, so that treatment targets the cause rather than just the pain.

"Osteopathy offers a holistic approach to managing headaches by addressing the underlying causes and promoting overall wellbeing, rather than simply masking the pain."
What causes tension headaches?

Tension headaches are typically caused by sustained muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back, often linked to poor posture, prolonged desk work, stress, or lack of movement. The muscles become tight and restrict normal joint movement, which can refer pain into the head.

This is one of the areas where osteopathic treatment is particularly effective, as releasing that muscular tension and restoring normal movement can provide significant and lasting relief.

What is a cervicogenic headache?

A cervicogenic headache originates in the neck (cervical spine) rather than in the head itself. It is caused by dysfunction in the joints, muscles, or nerves of the upper neck, which refers pain into the head, often felt at the base of the skull, behind the eyes, or across the forehead.

Cervicogenic headaches respond very well to osteopathic treatment, as the source of the problem is structural and directly addressable with hands-on techniques.

Can stress really cause physical headaches?

Yes. Stress causes the body to hold muscular tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders, and jaw. Over time this physical tension can trigger or worsen headaches. Stress also affects sleep, posture, and breathing patterns, all of which can be contributing factors.

Osteopathic treatment addresses both the physical effects of stress and the headache symptoms themselves, and we can offer practical guidance on stress management and relaxation techniques.

Our Approach

How Do We Identify the Cause of Your Headaches?

Our primary aim is to understand what is driving your headaches, not simply to treat the pain in the moment. At your first appointment, we take a thorough medical case history, exploring your work, lifestyle, posture, and daily habits. We then carry out a physical examination, looking for areas of muscular tension, joint restriction, or postural imbalance that may be contributing to your symptoms.

This gives us a clear picture of the causes and maintaining factors behind your headaches or migraines, allowing us to build a treatment plan that is specific to you.

What happens at the first appointment for headaches?

We begin with a detailed conversation about your headaches: how often they occur, where you feel the pain, how long they last, and what seems to trigger or relieve them. We also ask about your general health, work setup, sleep, stress levels, and any medication you are taking.

We then carry out a physical examination, assessing posture, joint mobility, and muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. From this, we explain our findings and discuss whether osteopathic treatment is appropriate for you.

Will you look at my posture and workstation setup?

Yes. Poor posture is one of the most common contributing factors to headaches, particularly tension-type headaches. We assess the whole body for postural imbalances that may be placing extra load on the muscles and joints of the neck and upper back, and we provide practical advice on improving your workstation ergonomics and daily habits to reduce strain.

Treatment

How Do Osteopaths Treat Headaches?

Osteopaths use a variety of hands-on techniques to assess, treat, and help prevent headaches and migraines. Rather than focusing on one area in isolation, we take a whole-body approach, considering the relationship between the musculoskeletal, circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems to identify the source of pain and dysfunction.

□️

Hands-On Treatment

Soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, and gentle manipulation to release tension and restore normal movement in the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

□

Stress & Relaxation

Techniques to calm the nervous system and practical strategies for managing stress, which is a well-recognised trigger for both tension headaches and migraines.

□

Personalised Advice

Guidance on posture, ergonomics, exercise, and stretching tailored to your lifestyle, so you can reduce headache frequency and manage symptoms day to day.

Can osteopathy help with migraines as well as tension headaches?

Yes. While tension headaches and migraines have different characteristics, both can involve underlying musculoskeletal, postural, and nervous system factors that osteopathy can address. We treat each patient individually, tailoring our approach to the type and pattern of headache you experience.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on the nature and history of your headaches. Some patients notice a significant improvement after two or three sessions; others benefit from a longer course of treatment combined with lifestyle changes. Your osteopath will discuss a realistic plan with you after the initial assessment.

Do I need to stop taking my headache medication?

No. Osteopathic treatment works alongside any medication prescribed or recommended by your GP, not as a replacement for it. We always work within your wider healthcare picture and would encourage you to speak to your GP about any changes to your medication.

When would you refer me to my GP?

Patient safety is always our priority. If we identify any signs during assessment that suggest a headache may have a more serious underlying cause, we will refer you to your GP promptly and explain our reasons clearly. We will never treat beyond what is safe and appropriate.
