Osteopathy for Babies, Children and Teenagers
Gentle, effective osteopathic care that supports your child's health and development, from their first weeks of life through to their teenage years.
As a parent, you want to know that the care your child receives is safe, evidence-informed, and truly tailored to them. At Wellfield Clinic, our osteopaths treat children of all ages, from newborns to teenagers, using gentle, hands-on techniques designed to support natural development, ease discomfort, and promote overall wellbeing.
This page explains what paediatric osteopathy involves, what it can help with, and what to expect when you bring your child to see us.
What Is Paediatric Osteopathy?
Paediatric osteopathy is a gentle, non-invasive form of hands-on therapy adapted specifically for babies, children, and teenagers. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, osteopaths take a whole-body approach, looking at how the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, and general health interact.
Our osteopaths will consider your child's age, stage of development, and individual health history before tailoring any treatment. This holistic approach means we look at the whole child, not just the presenting complaint.
What happens at a child's first osteopathy appointment?
At your first appointment, the osteopath will begin by asking what brought you in and taking a full health history. For babies and younger children, this includes details about the pregnancy, birth, and key developmental milestones.
They will then observe how your child moves, sits, or interacts, before carrying out a gentle physical examination, assessing muscle tone, joint mobility, and any areas of tension. Finally, they will explain their findings and whether osteopathic treatment is likely to help.
Is osteopathy safe for babies and young children?
Yes. Osteopathic treatment for babies and children uses very gentle techniques, particularly Cranial Osteopathy, which involves soft, barely perceptible touch. There is no manipulation or forceful movement. The approach is adapted entirely to suit the child's age and size.
All osteopaths in the UK are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and must meet strict standards of training and practice.
Why does the osteopath need to know about my child's birth?
The birth process places significant physical demands on a baby's body. In cases of assisted delivery (forceps or ventouse), caesarean section, prolonged labour, or a very rapid birth, there can be residual tension or strain patterns in the musculoskeletal system.
Understanding the birth story helps the osteopath build a fuller picture of any factors that might be contributing to your baby's current difficulties, whether that's feeding problems, unsettled behaviour, or discomfort.
Can Osteopathy Help My Baby?
Osteopathy for babies is one of the gentlest therapies available. Using soft, careful touch, our osteopaths can help ease common early-life difficulties that leave parents exhausted and worried.
What is Cranial Osteopathy and how does it work for babies?
Cranial Osteopathy is a soft, calming technique that focuses on the head, spine, and nervous system. Using very gentle pressure, the osteopath works to release tension and imbalances held in the body.
One of its key effects is activating the body's parasympathetic response, sometimes called the "rest and digest" system. This is essentially the opposite of "fight or flight," and helps to soothe an unsettled nervous system, reduce tension, and improve your baby's overall comfort and sleep.
How can osteopathy help with colic and reflux?
While colic and reflux can have multiple causes, osteopathic treatment may help by gently releasing physical tension around the abdomen, diaphragm, and digestive system, improving circulation and reducing nerve irritation that can contribute to discomfort.
Treatment can also support the nervous system in settling, which may help reduce the frequency and intensity of crying episodes.
How many sessions will my baby need?
Every baby is different. Some parents notice a difference after one or two sessions; others benefit from a short course of treatment. Your osteopath will discuss a realistic plan with you at the first appointment, and will always be honest if they feel another form of care would be more appropriate.
Osteopathy for Children: What Can It Help With?
As children grow, their bodies face new demands, from learning to walk and run, to carrying heavy school bags and sitting at desks for hours. Just like adults, children can develop joint pain, muscle tightness, and postural issues that benefit from osteopathic care.
Osteopathic treatment can also support children's general wellbeing. Reducing physical tension in the body can have a positive knock-on effect on mood, sleep, and comfort.
What conditions in children can osteopathy help with?
Common reasons parents bring their child to see an osteopath include:
• Growing pains and joint discomfort
• Tight muscles or restricted movement
• Postural issues (e.g., from heavy bags or prolonged screen use)
• Recurrent headaches
• Sleep difficulties and unsettled behaviour
• Recovery from minor injuries or falls
• General tension and stress held in the body
Will my child be comfortable during treatment?
Absolutely. Our approach is gentle, non-invasive, and adapted to each child's age and needs. Many children find osteopathic treatment relaxing. We always explain what we are doing, involve the child wherever appropriate, and proceed at a pace they are comfortable with.
How is Cranial Osteopathy beneficial for older children?
Cranial Osteopathy isn't just for babies. For older children, it can help to release tension held in the head and body, improve communication between the brain and nervous system, support circulation, and reduce inflammation. Many children find it deeply calming.
It can be particularly helpful alongside other treatments for children who experience anxiety, frequent headaches, or difficulty settling.
Osteopathy for Teenagers: More Than Just Sports Injuries
Teenage years bring rapid physical growth alongside increasing academic, social, and emotional pressures. At Wellfield Clinic, we see teenagers for a wide range of issues and we make sure they feel heard and respected throughout.
Sports Injuries
From sprains and strains to overuse injuries, we support active teenagers in recovering well and returning to the sports they love.
Posture & Screen Time
Prolonged time on phones, tablets, and laptops is increasingly contributing to neck pain, back ache, and poor posture in teenagers.
Exam Stress & Tension
Physical tension from stress and anxiety is very real. Osteopathic treatment can help the body release that tension and support overall wellbeing.
What does osteopathic treatment for a teenager involve?
Depending on what your teenager needs, treatment may include soft tissue massage, gentle joint mobilisation, or Cranial Osteopathy. We may also suggest simple home exercises to support recovery between sessions.
We always make sure teenagers have space to talk about what is going on and listen carefully before beginning any treatment.
Does my teenager need to be accompanied by a parent?
For patients under 16, a parent or guardian should be present for the appointment. For older teenagers, we are happy to discuss what feels most comfortable for both the young person and their family.
When would you recommend a teenager sees their GP instead?
We always put your teenager's wellbeing first. If we feel that another type of care would be more appropriate, or that a GP referral is needed, we will tell you clearly and help you understand the next steps. We will never treat beyond what osteopathy can safely and appropriately address.
