Babies and Children 029 2019 0040
Childbirth can be hard work. As with adults, osteopaths believe that mechanical stresses and strains may affect a babies or child's behaviour, Babies and some young children have a limited number of ways to communicate this to you and thus many parents bring their children to us because they cry more, sleep less or don't settle well. this can be very unsettling for parents. We understand this as we have been seeing babies for over thirteen years.
We undertake a full case history evaluation with you when you attend, this includes gaining information about pregnancy, childbirth, feeding history, health status, weight gain, and any other pertinent information from birth to the time of the consultation. this is not only so that we make a judgement as to why you child is behaving in the way they are but to also ensure that a referral to another healthcare professional may be more appropriate or not. We believe that listening to parents concerns and offering bespoke advice on coping, exercises and or treatment may help you cope better.
Infantile Colic.
Currently there is little evidence to support the use of techniques used by osteopaths for the clinical entity known as infantile colic, However this is not unusual as researchers agree that it is unlikely to be due to one cause and that no one intervention can help all babies. We favour the trialling approach, where parents trial different interventions, one at a time, if the intervention being trialled does not have the desired effect within a defined period of time then it should be ceased and another intervention trialled until parents find what works for them and their child.. we have used this approach for more than ten years.
Older children
During teenage years the body undergoes an enormous amount of change and many musculo-skeletal conditions. added to this children in this age group undertake many different sports that may put excessive stress on to these areas of development. Osteopaths are trained to diagnose, offer advice on treatment options, referral, activity and exercise for many of these conditions. It is worth calling the clinic to discuss this before attending if you are not sure.
Both Brian and Louise have undergone undergraduate & post graduate training in cranial osteopathy that includes paediatric osteopathy.
